New reading program for kids will cultivate academic & career success

The Mission Viejo Library is rolling out a new reading program for young children – 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten!

Geared to youngsters from ages 0-6, the 1,000 Books program is a nationwide initiative designed to foster essential reading habits from the get-go, since children who are read to at home are better prepared for school and continue to excel throughout their academic careers.

It's a love fest of poetry at the Mission Viejo Library in celebration of Valentine's Day.

Help the library celebrate the most romantic day of the year by penning a six-word love poem (or story) and emailing it to libraryreference@cityofmissionviejo.org. You can also drop it off at the library's Adult Reference Desk through February 14.

In partnership with Saddleback Community College, the “One Book, One Community” program encourages the community to read a shared book, examine relevant topics and themes and engage with others. Our goal is to promote reading and community discourse.

How much do you know about the early years of Mission Viejo? Local historian Bob Bunyan will give you the scoop during a special presentation on Sunday, January 28.

History buffs and folks who want to learn more about our City’s roots should mark their calendars for the presentation that starts at 3 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chamber, 200 Civic Center.

New York Times bestselling author Melanie Benjamin will present her latest release "The Girls in the Picture" on Wednesday, January 31.

The program begins at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center Drive.

Interested in having the library add a specific title to our collections?  The criteria we use for materials selection include:  reviews from professional journals or national magazines or newspapers, and appropriateness of the title for the collection and the community.  Titles about Mission Viejo and titles that focus on local history, events and issues are of particular interest.

Interested in having the library host a specific program or event? We are very interested in hearing your ideas. The criteria we use for program selection include: availability of resources, community interest, facility requirements, cost, relevance to the library, and more.

If we are able to provide a library program based on your recommendation, a librarian will contact you.
