Mission Viejo Library closing Monday, March 16; however, many services will still be available

Mission Viejo Library

Beginning at 6 pm on Monday, March 16, the Mission Viejo Library will be closed to the public until at least March 31. We continue to monitor guidance from the state and Orange County Health Care Agency and have been following recommendations closely. Last week, we canceled all our events, programs and meetings and suspended walk-in passport operations. We also closed our Friends of the Library Bookstore and volunteer-supported genealogy services. We removed about half the seating and shut off half the computers in the Library to allow for increased social distancing within the facility.

However, we clearly see the difficulty of maintaining social distance – even in a large public facility. For the past few days, the Library has been busier than usual, and while we understand the desire to stock up on materials or find a place outside the house to study, we must help our local community “flatten the curve” of the pandemic, protect our vulnerable populations and ensure our health care agencies have the capacity to meet demand.

Rest assured you will not accrue fines or lose holds due to the closure. We will extend all due dates until the Library reopens.

Staff will answer questions by phone or email as well as help locate materials and place holds. We have many online resources to assist with your research and entertainment needs while we are closed – simply by using your Library card:

Please call or email us with any questions or assistance needed with Library services at 949-830-7100 or libreference@cityofmissionviejo.org. We look forward to returning to regular business as soon as possible. In the meantime, we are working “creatively” to serve the needs of our community during this challenging time.

How do you request a book for drive up pick up? I tried to place a hold, but it won't let me because it says it's on the shelf.

As a result of the Governor's latest order, we have suspended curbside service. Library staff are available by telephone M-F from 10 am to 5 pm. Please give them a call with any questions!

Book drops in the parking lot are closed however, you can return books in the slot that is on the building close to the staff entrance to the Library (to the left of the main entrance). Fines have been suspended so you can also wait until the Library re-opens if you prefer.

Are new guidelines being developed for possible re-opening such as face masks being required, limited admission/occupancy of general public, physical distancing, limited hours-days, glove suggestion? Anticipating these kinds of future expected measures to be published along with a potential date for re-opening the main branch?

Thanks for your question. The library is closed to the public and we are not currently checking out physical materials. However, you can access our library catalog here to see if the library has the book you are interested in, and place holds on some items you want to check out when we reopen: https://catalog.cmvl.org/client/en_US/default.

In the meantime, we have a large number of digital titles available for checkout, and you can access them from the library website: https://cityofmissionviejo.org/digital-books.

If you need assistance with digital books or magazines, give us a call at 949-830-7100 x5101 Monday – Friday between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Thanks for your questions. We are in the process of developing safety guidelines for when city facilities reopen. Unfortunately, we do not yet have a date for that. The Governor’s Stay At Home order is in effect until further notice, but we are planning for varying levels of service depending on what safety and social distancing recommendations remain in place after the order is lifted. Follow the City news updates or check the library website as any changes will be posted in those locations.

Hello, I was just wondering when will the library open? I know some business have started opening as of 5/8/2020. I have been checking the website regularly and if it's opening soon, are there new rules and regulations and changes with the opening and closing time? It would be really helpful to get the library open soon especially for studying purposes.

Thank you so much.

City staff have been working on plans for reopening of City facilities and although we don’t have a date for the Library yet, rest assured we will publicize the information on our website, social media channels, and in the City's eNewsletter.

When can we apply for passports again? I had an appointment but it was canceled at the start of this pandemic.
