Meet Alfie, the sweet, elegant 2-year-old cat who has been waiting for a new home since March.

People tend to overlook black cats like Alfie because of the stigma associated with bad luck, but that’s certainly not true. These sweet felines have been given an unfair reputation. Countries like Japan, Ireland, Great Britain and Scotland embrace black cats as pets, believing them to be symbols of good fortune.

Lasso, a one-year-old black Labrador Retriever mix, is a fun-loving dog anxiously waiting at the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center for a home of his own.   Lasso is a bundle of energy who would thrive in a home where he could get plenty of exercise and some basic training.   He has a joy for life that is undeniable and contagious, and his polka-dotted feet look like he’s been romping in white paint. Adorable, indeed.

With the temperatures soaring, the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center is reminding you to keep your pets safe in the heat.  Dogs and cats cool themselves differently than we do because they cannot sweat.  Instead, they regulate their body heat through their mouths and tongues, which is a relatively inefficient method in extreme temperatures.  That’s why your pets should remain indoors where it’s cool.  Even a garage can get extremely hot, so pets should be kept in the house, preferably with the air conditioner set.

If you’re a basset hound lover and even if you’re not, you will fall in love with America and Mo.

This perfect pair of 7-year-old pooches enjoy playful time and want nothing more than a loving home together. Since they’re extremely bonded, Dedicated Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) is offering a BOGO special, so an approved applicant can take them both home for the cost of one adoption fee.

PAAW (Passionate About Animal Welfare) Youth Workshops this July

In an effort to teach kids and teens about the benefit of pet ownership, the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center will host two workshops July 21 and July 28.

The workshops take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will teach children about responsible pet ownership - from how to approach a pet and understand its behavior to caring for, feeding and grooming a pet. The sessions, which are specific to your child's age, are designed to shape children into responsible future pet owners.

Morgan, a long-haired tuxedo cat, is waiting for her forever home at the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center.  She was originally relinquished to the shelter when her former owner could no longer care for her.  She was quickly adopted but then returned because the other cat in the home was not fond of the newest addition. However, she would do well in a home with other well-behaved cats.

Kibbles and Bits are 1-year-old Chihuahuas who were rescued from an overcrowded shelter and are ready for a new life together.

These sassy sisters are entertaining to watch as they love to play and wrestle with each other. Once they’ve had enough play time, they like to cuddle and relax in the nearest lap.
