The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is teaming up with Saint Kilian Catholic Church to host a free 12-week session for people caring for someone with a mental illness.

The Family-to-Family sessions take place on Sundays from noon to 2:30 pm April 28 through July 28 at 26872 Estanciero Drive.

Family members and caregivers usually play the biggest role in caring for someone with a mental illness. This Family-to-Family program will give people the chance to ask questions, address concerns and gain valuable insight.

Mayor Greg Raths is joining other mayors across the nation in asking citizens to commit to using water more efficiently. On behalf of the City of Mission Viejo, Mayor Raths has taken the first step toward this commitment by joining the annual Wyland National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation, a month-long community service campaign to inspire citizens to make long-term commitments to water-use efficiency. The participation process is simple!

To help residents and businesses dispose of sensitive documents like tax records, bank statements and legal documents safely and securely, the City is hosting its next document shredding event on Saturday, April 6 at Mission Viejo High School.

Bring up to 10 bags or boxes of sensitive materials to drop off in the school parking lot at 25025 Chrisanta Drive from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for immediate shredding by Orange County Shredding. Binders and notebooks will not be accepted.

The City of Mission Viejo Character Committee on Wednesday, April 10 will host a Teen Mentoring Program to help equip 8th graders for some of the challenges they may face in high school. 

Planned and implemented by the student committee members, this free forum is designed to help 8th graders address some of the social issues they may encounter when entering high school such as bullying, stress, social isolation and time management. 

The Saddleback Valley Unified School District will host four community meetings next week regarding its new Facilities Master Plan (FMP). 

The school district has completed various steps over the past 16 months to prepare the FMP, with a vision “to create successful students for a world yet to be imagined.”  

Senator Pat Bates and Assemblyman Bill Brough are gearing up to host the 2019 South Orange County Senior Day on Friday, April 5 at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

Do you have the luck of the Irish? You'll be lucky to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Mission Viejo on Saturday, March 16 at the Irish Fest on the Green.

This fun-filled event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features entertainment by Cillian's Bridge, food and spirits, Irish dancers, crafts and games for the kids, a Euro bungee, sheep-herding demonstrations and so much more. 

Admission is free, so sport your favorite green garb and enjoy the day on the Village Green at Oso Viejo Park, 24942 Veterans Way.  

The Mission Viejo Community of Character Committee is hosting a special "John Wooden's Pyramid of Success" presentation from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 16 in the Capistrano Valley High School mall.  

If you've lost a spouse and feel like you've lost your social connections too, consider joining other widowed people every second Friday of the month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community Center.

During this South Orange County Widow and Widowers Network, which next meets on February 8, you will engage in supportive conversation and fun activities like games, music, dancing or dining. The new network is designed to connect people with similar situations for socialization and support. All ages are welcome. 

Donations of hygiene kits are sought as part of Orange County's 2019 Point-In-Time Homeless Count and Survey January 23-24.  

Donations of quart-size Ziploc bags; Chapstick; travel-size lotion, hand sanitizer and tissues; pairs of socks and beanies will be distributed during the homeless count, which will provide the county with updated numbers and demographics on the homeless population to help guide its response to the growing issue. 

Along with hygiene kits, letters of compassion as well as one-day OCTA bus passes are sought.
