If you want to give back to those in need, there are many opportunities to make the holidays a bit brighter for local families. Here are a few to consider:

South County Outreach provides housing assistance, food and other services to thousands of local families. In fact, its food pantry alone distributes nearly a million pounds of emergency, non-perishable and fresh food to about 9,000 families annually.

The Kiwanis Club of Mission Viejo is supporting our adopted troops with candy this holiday season through the annual "See's for Soldier's Program."

Club members, working with the City's Marine Adoption Committee, are selling See's candy from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in front of the Pavilions stores at Oso/Marguerite parkways and on Antonio Parkway December 15-17 and December 20-23.

Carren Chaney, a longtime Community Services Coordinator, has been named Mission Viejo’s 2017 Employee of the Year.

A 12-year employee of the City, Carren is known as a role model and someone who exemplifies customer service.

She is responsible for hiring, training and evaluating lifeguards at the City’s recreation centers. Among other duties, Carren enhances programming options at the facilities and citywide special events and works diligently to ensure the City’s vision is implemented every day.

The Kaleidoscope is gearing up to host a special Tree Lighting event on Saturday, December 2.

The center will host a holiday boutique and children's activities beginning at 5 p.m. Two hours later, caroling and entertainment will culminate in the lighting of the center's holiday tree.

The family event includes face painting, cookie decorating, crafts, hot cocoa and live music.

Kaleidoscope is located at 27741 Crown Valley Parkway.

Have you ever wanted to serve on a grand jury? Well, now’s your chance.  The Superior Court of Orange County is seeking qualified individuals to serve on the 2018-2019 Orange County Grand Jury.

Are you ready for some football? Two local high school football teams – which were both undefeated this season – will host exciting games on Friday, November 24.

The Mission Viejo City Council on November 28 will consider awarding a contract to Matrix Consulting Group to perform the Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) Contract Law Enforcement Cost and Efficiency Study.  The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 200 Civic Center.

Jolly old St. Nick is gearing up for his spectacular arrival at the Mission Viejo Civic Center on Sunday, November 26. The fun-filled celebration, which caters to folks of all ages, begins at 3 p.m. at 200 Civic Center.  Youngsters will enjoy craft projects, games and strolling Dickens Carolers spreading holiday cheer.

Residents are invited to participate in the annual Light Up a Life tree lighting celebration to honor and remember friends, loved ones or caregivers while supporting hospice and palliative care services at Mission Hospital.

The event is at 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 3 at the Mission Conference Center located at 26726 Crown Valley Parkway.
