The City and Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, in evaluating the best way to alleviate all inconsistencies with the California Voting Rights Act, agreed to replace Mission Viejo’s current at-large voting system. A new at-large voting process will be crafted that enhances the voting voice of all residents. This change won’t happen until 2020. The 2018 election in November will proceed in the traditional fashion.

The Mission Viejo City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved two actions in support of local control of public safety. The Council joined the amicus brief that supports the federal government's contention that federal law preempts contrary state laws and adopted a resolution in support of the Los Alamitos City Council's bid to opt out of the California law which prohibits local law enforcement from full cooperation with lawful federal authority.

After five public hearings, extensive public outreach, input and legal review, the Mission Viejo City Council on Tuesday, February 13 voted to maintain its current at-large voting system and identify appropriate remedies for solving the racially polarized voting issue in the City.

The Mission Viejo City Council on Tuesday, February 13 is expected to decide whether to transition from at-large to district-based council member elections during its fifth public hearing on the matter.
The public hearing begins at 6 p.m. in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.
Just after the New Year, the City Council will host the third and fourth of five public hearings to discuss the City's interest in and the process for transitioning from at-large to district-based council member elections.
The public hearings will take place at 6 p.m. on January 9 and again on January 12 in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.
Residents can weigh in on the City of Mission Viejo’s possible transition from at-large to district-based council member elections by drawing City maps and submitting comments online.

Ed Sachs was selected as Mayor and Greg Raths as Mayor Pro Tem during the Mission Viejo City Council's annual reorganization on Tuesday, December 12.
This is the first mayoral role for Ed Sachs who was elected in 2014 and has served as Mayor Pro Tem this year. Greg Raths has also served the residents of Mission Viejo since 2014.
During Tuesday's meeting, Wendy Bucknum, who served as 2017 Mayor, spoke about the strong state of our City via video and live.
