Conserving water has always been a hallmark of the City’s agenda. With California’s worsening drought, never has water conservation been more essential. 

The City of Mission Viejo has about 1,200 acres of landscape – 900-plus of that landscape is irrigated. Approximately eighty-six percent of the 900 acres is irrigated with recycled water. The City has always used recycled water to reduce use of potable water supplies. Water recycling means the use of treated wastewater for appropriate purposes including irrigation.

Volunteers are sought to help beautify the community and benefit the environment during a special Mission Viejo Tree Planting event on Saturday, May 1. 

The MVEduenviro group at Capistrano Valley High School is teaming up with the City to host the event from 9:30-11:30 am at the Upper Oso Creek Trail near the Village Green in Oso Viejo Park.  

Volunteers, who should sport closed-toe shoes and appropriate garb, will dig and plant one to two trees per volunteer or group. Water, materials and tools (shovels and gloves) will be provided that day.  

NOTE: The document shredding event originally scheduled for November 7 has been postponed due to predicted rain. The new date is November 14.

Mission Viejo residents and businesses can destroy their sensitive documents during the next free drive-through Document Shredding event on Saturday, November 7.

Hosted by the City and Waste Management, the event is from 9-11 am in the Mission Viejo City Hall parking lot at 200 Civic Center.

Shredding documents with personal or financial information helps prevent identity theft.

As a first step in improving the City’s recently acquired open space land and to enhance Mission Viejo’s pristine trail system, the City has been clearing brush and the slopes along the Oso Creek Trail. At the same time, the slopes along the Casta del Sol Golf Course have been cleared and grubbed, and several weakened trees that were potentially threatening adjacent homes were removed.

The Christopher Park renovation is expected to be completed by the end of June. 

Nestled on Valpariso, the park is unique because it’s bordered entirely by single-family homes of residents, who consider the site as part of their livable backyard. 

With the region receiving much rain this year, the contractor experienced many rain delays of construction. This week the contractor placed architectural boulders and will follow up with the installation of rubberized surfacing.

Public Services crews began repairing the damage to the bank of the Pinecrest Park flood control channel this week caused by winter rains.

Crews hauled in more than 200 cubic yards of soil and 100 tons of boulders to lessen the impacts from the storm flow of water that rushed through the park’s channel and damaged the slope along the creek next to the playground area. 

With heavy rainfall upon us this week, the City of Mission Viejo is reminding residents that sandbags are available to protect properties from flooding and emergency erosion.

Sandbags are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bags are pre-filled and are limited to 10 bags per resident. Residents can pick-up sandbags throughout the City at the following locations:

The best way to protect you and your family in a disaster is to have essential skills that could ultimately save your life. You can learn those skills and more by participating in our next free Community Emergency Preparedness Academy (CEPA) that begins on April 14.

To help residents and businesses safely and securely dispose of sensitive documents like tax records, bank statements and legal documents, the City and Waste Management are hosting a Document Shredding event on Saturday, March 7 at Mission Viejo High School.

Residents can bring up to 10 bags or boxes of sensitive materials to drop off in the school parking lot at 25025 Chrisanta Drive from 9-11 am for immediate shredding by Orange County Shredding. Binders and notebooks will not be accepted.

The California Earthquake Early Warning System now offers a free smartphone application which may provide residents with a crucial alert before they feel any shaking.
