Nothing could stop 14-year-old Lauren Kiani from swimming a mile "” the final step for earning a prestigious Congressional Gold Certificate Award.

In fact, she spent the last 6 months training for the feat at the City's Montanoso Recreation and Fitness Center since learning of the opportunity through her local scout troop and church.

"I am interested in developing myself through volunteerism, physical fitness and in setting and achieving personal goals," said Kiani, who plans to study physics in college.

As part of an ongoing effort to help people in our community, the City of Mission Viejo is continuing to host drive-through food drives benefiting different nonprofits on the third Saturday of the month at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center.

Most-needed food items include oatmeal, pasta, hearty soups, cereal, dried beans, canned chicken, macaroni & cheese, canned fruit, canned pasta, canned chili, canned mixed vegetables (no green beans or corn), canned beef stew, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, protein bars and dinner helpers.

The popular Kids Factory is returning for the 2021/22 school year with registration kicking off at 9 am on Tuesday, July 13. 

A drop-in recreation program sponsored by the City of Mission Viejo, Kids Factory caters to elementary school children in grades K-6.  The dynamic program offers fun activities like crafts, games, sports, special-event days and much more. 

Kids Factory is $300 for the entire school year. For specific times and locations, visit communityservices.svusd.org.  

If you want to book a picnic shelter for a special event or family fun, you're in luck. Online reservations begin on Tuesday, July 6. 

Picnic shelters are located at Florence Joyner Olympiad Park, 22760 Olympiad Road, and Melinda Park at 28951 Melinda Road. 

First bookings begin on Saturday, August 6.  

The Mission Viejo Activities Committee (MVAC) will host a July 4th Fireworks Spectacular show at 9 pm launched from the Marty Russo Youth Athletic Park at 22056 Olympiad Road.

The City of Mission Viejo is seeking lifeguards of all ages to help staff its recreation centers that are open year-round. The job can be rewarding for retired adults and young adults, with a passion for water safety and working outdoors, seeking a part-time position. 

Older adults, retirees, college students and athletes looking for part-time work are encouraged to apply.

The Recreation and Fitness Centers are rolling out the reopening red carpet on July 1. That is the date you can enjoy the many amenities the Montanoso and Sierra Recreation and Fitness Centers offer. Memberships start at $30 per month with access to three activity-filled facilities providing something for everyone.

The Spirit League, which provides sports programming for special needs adults and children, is gearing up for summer and fall with fun volleyball and soccer seasons.
