Regular meetings of the Planning and Transportation Commission are held on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Council Chamber, Mission Viejo City Hall, 200 Civic Center. Planning and Land Use
As stipulated by California statute, advises the City Council in developing and drafting land use and planning legislation. This includes the General Plan and its amendments, specific plans, and implementing ordinances, such as the Zoning Code. Makes recommendations to the City Council regarding land use. Reviews proposed development for consistency with the Development Code and the General Plan of the City and for compatibility with the surrounding neighborhood and environment. Also performs a quasi-judicial function by deciding whether particular projects or requests presented meet requirements of the General Plan, Zoning Ordinances, and/or State law. Decisions may be appealed to the City Council.
Traffic and Transportation
Acts in advisory capacity to the City Council on all traffic matters relating to: receiving complaints relating to traffic matters; surveying, reviewing, and making recommendations relative to traffic conditions, improvement of traffic conditions, and the administration and enforcement of traffic regulations; surveying, reviewing, and recommending plans for improved parking; and surveying, reviewing, and recommending safety programs, campaigns, and activities to educate the public in traffic safety. Initiates and maintains traffic safety programs and campaigns pursuant to the California Traffic Safety Program, Vehicle Code Division 2, Chapter 5, Sections 2900-2910. Acts as a liaison to communicate information obtained from the general public and other local agencies to the City Council.

The Planning and Transportation Commission appoints two Planning and Transportation Commissioners to serve on the Commission's Design Review Committee and two Planning and Transportation Commissioners to serve on the Traffic Committee.
