Mission Viejo Life

Are you ready for a “spooktacular” Halloween concert? Then, don’t miss the Newgate Chamber Orchestra’s “Sleepless Hollow” on Saturday, October 28 at Fairhaven Memorial Services.

Sponsored by the Mission Viejo Friends of the Arts and City, the event begins at 6 p.m. with an art show followed by the concert at 7 p.m.

The Mission Viejo community is still celebrating the success of this year’s Walk Against Drugs, a longtime event designed to promote healthy choices and drug-free lifestyles.

On Saturday, thousands – sporting red T-shirts – took to the streets and walked up and down La Paz Road from Mission Viejo High School to Oso Viejo Community Park. Once again, this event united City, Sheriff’s Department, schools, businesses, residents and community groups in sharing the message.

Runners from six community colleges will compete in Mission Viejo this week in the Orange Empire Conference Cross Country 2017 Championships.

Hosted by Saddleback College, the October 26 event features a women's 5K and 4-mile trek for men along the Village Green and Oso Creek Trail.

The women's race begins at 9 a.m. followed by the men’s at 10 a.m.

Local teens are in for a treat during Teen Gaming Day from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, October 29 at the Mission Viejo Library Storytime Room, 100 Civic Center.

Held in honor of International Games Week, this fun free event for teens ages 13-18 will feature a host of card, electronic and board games including Munchkin, Pandemic and Catan.  Many provided by The Game Chest of Mission Viejo. Teens will also enjoy tabletop roleplaying and virtual reality (VR) games.  The event includes free pizza.

The City, Mission Viejo Police Services and Drug Enforcement Administration will host a National Prescription Medication Take-Back Day event on Saturday, October 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the far end of the Mission Viejo Civic Center parking lot at 200 Civic Center Drive.

Residents can drive through and drop off unwanted, unused and expired prescription medications for proper disposal – free and anonymous. Liquids, needles and sharps will NOT be accepted.

More students will have the chance to hop aboard the MV Shuttle, thanks to new route changes designed to cater to the shuttle’s increasing popularity among high school students.

The MV Shuttle has been serving Capistrano Valley High School at morning and afternoon bell times since its inception last fall.  Starting Monday, October 9, the shuttle will make a new 5:20 p.m. stop at the school to accommodate students who participate in after-school activities.

While City Hall prepares for the Tuesday, July 4th Independence Day holiday, the public should be aware of closures at some Mission Viejo facilities.

City Hall and the Mission Viejo Library will be closed on Tuesday, but reopen for normal business hours on Wednesday.

The Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center will be closed on Tuesday.  The center reopens at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
