Mission Viejo

As part of an ongoing effort to educate residents in emergency preparedness, the City of Mission Viejo is offering detailed information through the Emergency Survival Program (ESP).  This guide features monthly topics, historical information and what you can do now to prepare. November's focus is on wildfires.

Unfortunately, this topic is timely: Recent fires in Napa, Sonoma and other Northern California counties together have been the deadliest and most destructive in state history. Closer to home, vegetative fires have burned homes and continue to cause extensive damage.

Babs is a sweet 3-year-old domestic shorthaired brown tabby.  She treats every day like an easy Sunday morning - lounging around in bed with a cozy blanket and leisurely nibbling on snacks.  At nearly 15 pounds, it's safe to say Babs enjoys her food.  She can be vocal and engaging when she's looking for some one-on-one time but is typically self-content and easygoing.  Her mellow personality would do best in a quiet home.

Are you ready for a "spooktacular" Halloween concert? Then, don't miss the Newgate Chamber Orchestra's "Sleepless Hollow" on Saturday, October 28 at Fairhaven Memorial Services.

Sponsored by the Mission Viejo Friends of the Arts and City, the event begins at 6 p.m. with an art show followed by the concert at 7 p.m.

The Mission Viejo community is still celebrating the success of this year’s Walk Against Drugs, a longtime event designed to promote healthy choices and drug-free lifestyles.

On Saturday, thousands – sporting red T-shirts – took to the streets and walked up and down La Paz Road from Mission Viejo High School to Oso Viejo Community Park. Once again, this event united City, Sheriff’s Department, schools, businesses, residents and community groups in sharing the message.

Stratford School Mission Viejo invites the community to come and enjoy an evening of good old-fashioned family fun at its annual Country Fair on Friday, November 3, 2017, from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Entrance to the event is free and open to the public.

This year's event will be held in Stratford's Pioneer Park, the school's three-acre riparian habitat and play area. The Country Fair committee is taking advantage of the park's natural environment by installing lights among the trees to create a magical and enchanting setting.

Sharon Cody, a longtime community advocate and visionary, was recognized this week for her vast contributions to Mission Viejo by having her name added to the City's Wall of Recognition.

The Wall of Recognition at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center pays homage to people who make significant and lasting contributions to our community.

Tennis enthusiasts from across Southern California will flock to the Marguerite Tennis Pavilion October 26-28 for the first Girls' Junior Tennis Classic - The Marguerite.

After several years without a female comparable tournament to Ojai, the oldest boys' amateur tournament in the United States, The Marguerite will feature 32 singles and 16 doubles teams comprised of girls ages 14-19.

CANCELED - Tis the season for Halloween horror movies - with freaky characters like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and Chucky.  If you're a horror movie buff, then make plans for the Halloween Horror Movie Trivia night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 27.

Test your knowledge of horror classics like "Halloween"; "A Nightmare on Elm Street"; "Carrie"; and others.

You can't miss them. Hay-stuffed figures sporting costumes - some spooky, some not - placed around town for the City's inaugural Scarecrow Contest.

The scarecrows were made by local nonprofits, schools, faith-based organizations and the Chamber of Commerce. They'll be on display until mid-November.

That is the premise of the Great California ShakeOut, a drill City of Mission Viejo employees and some local schools and businesses will participate in at 10:19 a.m. on October 19.  The annual ShakeOut provides people with an opportunity to practice how to protect themselves during earthquakes.

Unless you are driving, the simple answer if the ground starts to shake is to drop, take cover and hold on.
