With the unacceptable recurring gun violence and mass shootings affecting schools around the country, Mission Viejo Mayor Ed Sachs was joined today by five Mayors, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and Representatives of the Capistrano Unified School District to announce the formation of “Secure OC Schools.”

Two Mission Viejo soccer teams will compete in the Western States Championship tournament on March 17 after clinching two area and regional championship tournaments. 

The ascent to victory for AYSO Region 84 Champion Cup winners - G12 Dynamite and B10 Bruins - came after winning the AYSO Area L Championship, encompassing 10 regions in south Orange County and, most recently, the AYSO Section 11 Tournament. G12 Dynamite and B10 Bruins competed against teams from throughout Southern California.

Mission Viejo High School junior Matt Sorenson was nominated for the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders program in Boston.

This Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). This year’s program is June 29-July 1 in Lowell, MA. The program is designed to honor, inspire and direct the country’s top students who aspire to be scientists and technologists to follow their dreams and reach their goals. 

Senator Pat Bates and Assemblyman Bill Brough are gearing up to host the 2018 South Orange County Senior Day on Friday, March 9 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

Mission Viejo Television is now broadcasting a special episode of "Coaches Corner with Paul Higgins” featuring his revealing conversation with Hometown Hero and recently retired Mission Viejo High School football Coach Bob Johnson.

"Coaches Corner" is a popular half-hour show that takes an in-depth look at local coaches, athletes, and newsmakers.

Smoke may be visible this week from Ortega Highway and the I-5 and I-15 freeways from prescribed burns the U.S. Forest Service is planning to conduct throughout the week in the Trabuco Ranger District. 

This is expected to be a 7-acre burn in the Santa Ana Mountain Range.  A prescribed burn, also called a controlled burn, is a wildfire set deliberately to reduce future wildfire hazards. 

Mission Viejo's Marguerite Tennis Pavilion was recognized today as the top Public Facility of the Year by the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR), a global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 16,000 members in 125 countries.

The award was presented during the 2018 PTR International Tennis Symposium in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

After five public hearings, extensive public outreach, input and legal review, the Mission Viejo City Council on Tuesday, February 13 voted to maintain its current at-large voting system and identify appropriate remedies for solving the racially polarized voting issue in the City.
