The City of Mission Viejo and Orange County Sheriff's Department will take part in National Take Back Day on Saturday, April 29 as part of an ongoing effort to prevent drug abuse and theft.

The City will host a drive-through drop-off location from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the City Hall parking lot at 200 Civic Center.  The Sheriff's Department is working on the collection with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. There is no cost to drop off medications. Individuals can dispose of drugs free of charge and remain anonymous.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department's DUI Enforcement Team will deploy this weekend to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers from 7 p.m. Friday, April 7 through 3 a.m. Saturday, April 8 in Mission Viejo and Lake Forest.

In recognition of April's designation as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Mission Viejo Police Services encourages residents to always practice safe driving habits.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2015 alone, 3,477 people were killed and more than 390,000 injured in accidents involving distracted drivers. Even more distressing, teens were the largest age group reported as distracted during fatal collisions.

Mission Viejo Police Services is inviting residents for a cup of coffee and the opportunity to meet their local deputies and Police Services staff on Wednesday, April 12 during the Coffee with a Cop event.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Starbucks, 24012 Alicia Parkway. There will be free cups of coffee for folks while they last.

Chief of Police Services Lt. Ken Binning, patrol deputies and other police services staff will be there. In a casual setting, residents will have a chance to ask questions or share concerns.

DUI saturation patrols will be out in force from 7 p.m. Friday, March 10 through 3 a.m. Saturday, March 11 in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions and arrests in Mission Viejo and Lake Forest.

You cannot predict a disaster, but you can certainly prepare for one. That’s the message the City continues to drive home to residents each month by encouraging personal and community emergency preparedness.

As part of that ongoing effort, the City of Mission Viejo is offering detailed information through the Emergency Survival Program (ESP).  This guide features monthly topics, historical information and what you can do now to prepare. This month’s focus is on creating disaster supply kits.

Orange County Sheriff’s Department investigators are looking for a suspect who burglarized a home in the 27000 block of Pueblonuevo Drive, making off with more than $6,700 in valuables.

Deputies at about 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 responded to reports of a home burglary to find a shattered back door and a ransacked home.

Among the stolen items were a Rolex watch, several pieces of jewelry, including a ring with diamonds and pearls valued at $5,000, and a black floor safe.

Mission Viejo City Hall is mourning the loss of one its beloved volunteers Cliff McKinley who passed away this week at the age of 90.

Cliff was a longtime member of the City’s Senior Community Activity Team (SCAT), a program that assists Mission Viejo Police Services with everything from van patrol and home vacation checks to help at special events and City Hall.

Led by top experts from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and other agencies, the “Facts about Synthetic Drugs” presentation is from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mission Viejo High School, 25025 Chrisanta Drive.
