With hot temperatures lingering in the forecast, pet owners are reminded to take the following precautions to keep their animals happy, healthy and safe.

With excessive heat in the forecast this week, the City of Mission Viejo is encouraging residents to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. The Mission Viejo Library at 100 Civic Center; Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way; and Marguerite Tennis Pavilion at 27474 Casta Del Sol all serve as comfortable cooling centers for folks to beat the heat.

To stay safe during extreme heat, remember the following tips:

The City of Mission Viejo is encouraging residents to be “Hunger Champions” as part of an ongoing effort to end hunger in the region.

September marks “Hunger Action Month,” a nationwide campaign to mobilize the public to take action on the issue of hunger. In Orange County alone, hunger affects more than 315,000 residents. Nearly half – 129,000 – are children.

Mission Viejo Police Services and the City are giving community members the chance to destroy their sensitive documents on Saturday, September 9. The free drive-through document shredding event is from 8 a.m. to noon in the Mission Viejo High School parking lot at 25025 Chrisanta Drive.

Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the nation, and shredding documents with personal or financial information can be an effective measure of prevention.

As part of an ongoing effort to educate residents in emergency preparedness, the City of Mission Viejo is offering detailed information through the Emergency Survival Program (ESP).  This guide features monthly topics, historical information and what you can do now to prepare. September's focus is on back-to-school safety.

It’s almost Friday night and the mood is right for eating out – Mission Viejo style. This weekend marks the end of the 1st annual Mission Viejo Restaurant Week.

Hosted by the Mission Viejo Chamber of Commerce and City of Mission Viejo, Restaurant Week has encouraged folks to explore the City’s culinary landscape while keeping their dining dollars local.

Save the date for Tuesday, September 12 when popular author J.A. Jance appears in the City’s Writers Present program at 7 p.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

Beloved stand-up comedian, author and actor Paula Poundstone will discuss her new book “The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 27 at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center.
