Animal Services

Are you looking for a declawed cat? Bandit is a 2-year-old domestic short-haired kitty who has been living at the shelter for two months.  He is affectionate, chatty and laid-back and has become one of our specially treated residents.

Are you seeking a new feline friend who likes to snuggle? Perhaps it's a charming chestnut tabby with golden eyes or a perfectly marked tuxedo cat that's calling your name? Whatever your feline fancy, head to the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center for a special two-week promotion on adult cats.

Dedicated Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) is offering reduced adoption fees for any approved applicant.  You will pay only $20 for an adult cat's microchip to start your new life together. Stop by to meet our chatty chestnut tabby, snuggle bug Persian kitty or gorgeous tuxedo girl.

Happy fall!

It seems everyone I've talked to is excited that summer has passed, and autumn has arrived! Fall brings many changes to our weather, and our native plants and animals adjust seasonal changes in weather to maximize conditions for their lifecycles.

Officer Stewart was dispatched to a call in Mission Viejo regarding two raccoons stuck in a dumpster. When he arrived, both raccoons were frightened and desperate to get out of the dumpster. He painstakingly removed them both from the dumpster, released them and they both happily ran up a tree.

Join us on Saturday, November 9 for a joint anniversary celebration. We will celebrate 25 years and our neighbors the Animal Urgent Care of South Orange County will celebrate 40 years of serving the pets in our community.

Festivities for the day include free tacos while they last (limited quantity), live music, face painting, caricature artist, kid crafts, silent auction, a low-cost pet vaccine clinic from 9-10:30 am and much more!

The event is free and runs 9 am to noon.

Be a hero this month and adopt a dog from your local shelter or rescue group. You will significantly improve their life along with your own as dogs are amazing, supportive, and heroic companions. Animal shelters and rescue groups are brimming with happy, healthy pets just waiting for someone to take them home. Most shelter pets wound up here because of a human problem like a move or a divorce, not because the animals did anything wrong. Many are already house-trained and used to living with families.

But what if you can't adopt? Here are some easy ways you can still help:

Meet sweet 1-year-old Dalton, the perfect mix between a German Shepherd and Australian Kelpie.  Both breeds are extremely intelligent and loyal.

Species have and inevitably do move around the globe raising complex questions about what is native or non-native. Frequently, there is confusion over the origination of wildlife "”both plants and animals.
Categorizing species is a helpful way to clarify exactly what role any animal has in an ecosystem or in its distribution around our planet. Here are six categorizations used to explain species and their presence in a habitat.

Along with some exciting changes to our volunteer program, we are launching a new Volunteer of the Month program! We have added a reserved parking sign in the parking lot to honor our volunteer all month long.

Our very first volunteer of the month is Kindra McMahon, a dog walker and 5-year shelter volunteer! She always has a big smile, positive attitude and is ready for action. We can always count on her at a moment's notice for extra support, and our resident canines absolutely adore her!
