More than 60 people gathered in the City Council Chamber on July 14 to witness 20 individuals try their luck in the City’s 2nd annual Adult Spelling Bee.

The contest went 18 rounds before a winner was named. Debi Blohm, an escrow officer who moved to Mission Viejo in 2007, won after correctly spelling denouement. This was her second straight victory after clinching the title in last year’s inaugural event for spelling Fahrenheit.

The Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center will be closed Saturday, July 29 while the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints hosts its Pioneer Days event on the Village Green.

The closure will accommodate routine maintenance of the facility as well as the many visitors expected to flock to the special event. The facility will resume normal operations at noon on Sunday.

Mission Viejo resident Dalal Dawly has always enjoyed gardening and finding out if she could grow different vegetables and fruit. This year, she discovered she could grow a giant pumpkin in her front yard.

City staff stopped by Dalal’s home Monday to find out about growing the giant pumpkin, caring for it and if it will be turned into a giant pumpkin pie.

Members of the professional Orange County Soccer Club will be on hand Monday, July 24 for opening day of the 2017 Soccer For Hope Camp in Mission Viejo.

Designed to raise funds for childhood cancer research, the camp is from 9 a.m. to noon July 24-28 at the World Cup Soccer Field, 27301 La Paz Road. Boys and girls ages 7-13 can participate, and teens 14-19 are encouraged to volunteer and earn community-service hours.

The Mission Viejo Girls’ Softball 14u "Illusion" team has made it through district championships; battled in 110-degree heat to advance through state championships; and is now heading to Northern California to compete for a national title beginning July 31.

The team’s road to the nationals was paved with success and victories at prestigious competitions.  The girls play competitive fast-pitch softball with dedication, sportsmanship and a team spirit unmatched by others.

Foodies will rejoice with the chance to savor something new during the 1st Annual Mission Viejo Restaurant Week August 21-27.

We’ll be looking for you to share photos of your dining experiences on Instagram with #dineMV. So, mark your calendar and get ready to dig in to something delicious!

With excessive heat in the forecast this weekend, the City of Mission Viejo is encouraging residents to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. The Mission Viejo Library at 100 Civic Center; Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way; and Marguerite Tennis Pavilion at 27474 Casta Del Sol all serve as comfortable cooling centers for folks to beat the heat.

To stay safe during extreme heat, remember the following tips:

Businesses seeking to hang temporary banners advertising their services and events can now do so without paying a $60 City permit fee, under a plan the City Council recently approved.

As part of an ongoing effort to support local businesses in the community, the City Council approved a 2-year fee waiver for all temporary banner permits. Applicants must still obtain a permit from City Hall but it’s now free.  All other rules still apply, including the 24-square-foot size requirement and 42-day maximum period.

While City Hall prepares for the Tuesday, July 4th Independence Day holiday, the public should be aware of closures at some Mission Viejo facilities.

City Hall and the Mission Viejo Library will be closed on Tuesday, but reopen for normal business hours on Wednesday.

The Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center will be closed on Tuesday.  The center reopens at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

The play is the thing!  Back by popular demand, Shakespeare by the Sea returns to Saddleback College to perform two ageless works, “Macbeth” on July 15 and “The Taming of the Shrew” on July 16.

Proudly presented by the City of Mission Viejo, Mission Viejo Friends of the Arts, and the Saddleback College Department of Theatre Arts as a part of their Summer of Theater, both plays start each night at 7:30 p.m., with festival seating beginning at 6 p.m. on the Upper Campus Quad.
