Learn how to reduce your risk of breast cancer during a free program from 9:30-11 am Saturday, October 8 at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center.

Led by Leonard Cancer Institute Breast Program Director Dr. Marla Anderson and Regional Manager of Genetic Medicine Sandra Brown, the program will focus on risk factors, prevention and healthy lifestyle choices. 

The next City Council meeting date has been tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, October 25 at 5 pm.  There will be no Council meeting on Tuesday, October 11.

Council meetings are streamed live on the City's website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99.

The City is seeking applications to fill vacancies for 2-year terms on its Planning and Transportation Commission, Community Services Commission and Investment Advisory Commission.  

Appointed by the City Council, the Commissions - except for 7-member Community Services Commission - are comprised of five members.  The City Council will make its appointments at the January 10, 2023 City Council meeting.    

The Orange County Registrar of Voters is accepting applications through October 10 for customer service representatives to work in Vote Centers throughout the County for the November 8 General Election. 

Vote Centers operate from four to 11 days and customer service representatives help process and assist voters; issue ballots; accept vote-by-mail ballots; set up and take down election equipment; and other election-related tasks. 

Amid staunch opposition from the City Council and League of California Cities in vehemently opposing AB 2011, which would strip local control and take decisions away from Mission Viejo residents, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday signed two new housing bills that will impact municipalities.  

The Fourth District, Division 3 of the California Court of Appeal has issued a stay that maintains the Mission Viejo City Council members in office as legitimate and lawful incumbents.

"The complicated legal issues presented in this matter have resulted the Court asking for additional briefing on these first instance issues that have significant consequence statewide," said City Attorney William Curley. 

The Mission Viejo Chamber of Commerce is hosting two Community & Legislative Affairs meetings in October that will focus on candidates running for local and state offices.  

First up is the Community & Legislative Affairs meeting on Thursday, October 13 from 8 to 9:30 am in the Council Chamber. The meeting will give folks the chance to meet the candidates running for Congress, State Senate and State Assembly. The candidates will also discuss why they are running and what they hope to accomplish if elected. 

New and exciting virtual and in-person gardening classes are now available at the Norman P. Murray Center through the OC Master Gardeners and expert gardener Kris Bonner. From learning how to start growing vegetables that you can harvest in the fall, winter, and early spring to reducing the use of water by adding California native plants, the classes are fun and beneficial.

Beautiful Bulbs, Made Easy 

Local teens, parents and families are invited to the 4th annual Together4Teens conference - designed to increase awareness and support for youth mental health - on Saturday, October 1. 

Geared toward youth ages 12-18, adult family members and others, the free conference is from 9 am to 12:30 pm at Capistrano High School, 26301 Via Escolar.
