Recreation

If you know a hero in Mission Viejo, now's your chance to nominate the individual for our annual Male and Female Veterans of the Year awards.  These are residents who bravely served our country and continue to serve our community by giving back.

We launched this program in 2011 to celebrate local veterans from all wars and conflicts. Since then, veteran honorees have been recognized during our annual Veterans Day ceremony.

The City of Mission Viejo is seeking lifeguards of all ages to help staff its recreation centers that are open year-round. The job can be rewarding for retired adults, with a passion for water safety and working outdoors, seeking a part-time position.

Across the country, older adults and retirees are stepping up to the lifeguard chair "” a job that historically has been a rite of passage for high-schoolers and college students. But with school back in session, the teen summer job is drying up and older adults are stepping up to fill the gaps.

The Mission Viejo Nadadores Diving Team is flying high after finishing a new community outreach program designed to serve kids in need.

The first of its kind in the nation, the "Discover a Diver" 10-lesson series was funded by a $3,000 grant from USA Diving, the national governing body for the sport.  The program identified 10 underserved children in the area and taught them the sport of diving.

Calling all superheroes! Bring your superpowers, grandparents and zest for fun to our Grandparents Day Dinner Dance Sunday, September 9 at the Norman P. Murray Community Center.

In honor of our special grandparents, this superhero-themed celebration is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 24932 Veterans Way. This fun-filled evening with your favorite superheroes features activities by the Mad Platter, a photo booth, arts and crafts and delectable dinner.

A prize will be awarded for the best superhero costume. Cost is $5 for kids and $10 for adults.

Get ready to make a splash and compete for bragging rights at this year’s Cardboard Boat Derby event on Saturday, August 25 at the Marguerite Aquatics Complex.

The fun takes place 3-6 p.m. and includes an exciting derby race where teams will build a boat out of cardboard and duct tape and attempt to race to the other side of the pool without sinking. Before the competition heats up, guests will enjoy games, music and food.

The Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center will be closed Saturday until 5 p.m. (private rentals that evening) and on Sunday while the West Coast Futbol soccer tournament takes place.

The closure will accommodate the many visitors expected to flock to the event at the community center and Oso Viejo Park. The facility will resume normal operations at 8 a.m. on Monday, August 13.

The Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center is located at 24932 Veterans Way. For information about this beautiful facility, room rentals, programs and more, call 949-470-3062
