Did you know?

Did you know April 7-13 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week? In 2023, Mission Viejo Animal Services addressed nearly 300 dog bite incidents. In California, dog bites carry strict liability implications. This is one of many reasons it’s imperative to maintain proper control over your dog, whether through a sturdy leash or ensuring the security of your property. The majority of dog bite incidents stem from a lack of proper restraint, highlighting the need for responsible pet ownership. Here are a few tips to help prevent dog bites:

  • Secure your dog. Make sure your dog is secured in a separate room, crate or fenced area during delivery times. This prevents any surprise encounters between your dog and the delivery driver. Do not leave your dog unleashed in your front yard when you expect a delivery.
  • Socialize your dog. Expose your dog to a variety of people, animals and environments to help it become more comfortable with new situations.
  • Train your dog. Train your dog to be comfortable with strangers and to follow basic commands.
  • Take it slow. If your dog has been mainly interacting with your family since you brought it home, don't rush out into crowded areas or dog parks. Try to expose your dog to new situations slowly and for short periods of time, arrange for low-stress interactions, and give plenty of praise and rewards for good behavior.
  • Monitor your dog's behavior and health. Regularly monitor your dog's behavior and consult with your veterinarian if you notice any signs of aggressive behavior.
  • Be responsible about approaching other people's pets. Ask permission from the owner before approaching a dog and look for signs that the dog wants to interact with you. Sometimes dogs want to be left alone, and we need to recognize and respect that.
  • Make sure you are walking your dog on a leash. Recognize changes in your dog's body language indicating it may not be comfortable.

Additionally, it is essential to understand the legal ramifications due to a dog bite. If your dog bites a person, you are obligated to provide your information and your dog’s rabies vaccination status. Failure to comply can result in serious legal consequences, including criminal charges. The severity of the incident can lead to further repercussions. Dogs with multiple bites or those causing severe injury may be deemed dangerous by the City, subjecting them to safety restrictions to protect the public. It's crucial to remember that prevention is key. Responsible pet ownership, including proper training and restraint, can significantly reduce the likelihood of dog bite incidents and promote safer communities for both humans and animals alike.
