June is National Foster a Pet Month
Fosters are people in the community who volunteer their time and home to a shelter pet in need. The fostering process, while full of commitment, is beneficial for both the shelter pet and family involved! Fostering helps homeless animals because of the consistency a dedicated caregiver offers in a quiet, low-stress setting. Fostering provides the animal more opportunities for socialization, exploration, and expressing a wide range of normal behaviors that are difficult to achieve when the animal remains in a shelter environment.
Fostering also opens space for animal shelters to take in more pets, saving more lives in the process.
If you have the space and time to temporarily bring a pet into your home, now is a great time to do it. Fostering a dog or cat is a great way to know if you're ready to adopt or just help a pet in need for a bit. Plus, it can make the whole process of being socially distant feel less lonely. The Mission Viejo Animal Services Center needs fosters for adult cats. If you are interested, email us at animalinfo@cityofmissionviejo.org.
GreaterGood.org is compiling a list of shelters and rescues looking for foster families and matches those groups with fostering volunteers from the national community.
