May Volunteer of the Month
Our Mission Viejo Animal Services Center volunteer of the month is Carl Lekander, who has been volunteering at the center since summer 2008. After retiring, he wanted an opportunity to give back to the community. Carl and his wife both love animals.
“So, looking to Mission Viejo Animal Services for fulfillment seemed perfect,†he said. “After approximately 15 years, I clearly made the right choice.â€
Carl began as a dog walker before moving on to assist with other volunteer tasks at the center. Carl helped with establishing the pet pantry; volunteers as a greeter; and assists with customer service at the front office. Carl also serves as a hearing officer for the center. He is extremely fair and diligent when hearing cases.
“The shelter is like an extended family,†Carl said. “I have found the staff to be very welcoming and supportive and the volunteers really enjoy the camaraderie. For any resident who loves animals and is looking for a friendly atmosphere and an opportunity to give back to the community, I highly recommend the volunteer program.â€
Carl’s current favorite animal at the shelter is Ernie.
“He’s truly exceptional,†Carl said. “Please come to the shelter and meet him. He has stolen all our hearts.â€
Aside from the shelter, Carl also volunteers with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and small business mentoring. He loves to read and play golf.
Carl embodies what volunteerism is all about. We are forever grateful to Carl and everything he has done for the center and our local community.
