Rabbit Care Volunteer Description and Duties

Program Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to work a three hour shift weekly, and provide a one year commitment.
  • A valid tetanus vaccine record is required within 30 days.
  • Must be physically able to handle a rabbit that can weigh up to 15 pounds.
  • Must be physically be able to squat multiple times throughout the shift.
  • Ability to interact with animals safely.
  • Ability to recognize abnormalities in animal behavior and health.

Process:

  • Must attend a interview, volunteer orientation and training session (training provided)

Purpose:

  • Assist in rabbit care and cleaning at the shelter
  • Assist in educating the public about responsible pet ownership, and help potential pet owners in the selection and adoption of a new pet.

Duties:

  • Socialize and exercise the rabbits
  • Clean rabbit hutches, bedding, litter boxes and food bowls
  • Provide fresh food and water for the rabbits
  • Notify kennel attendants of any health or behavior issues noticed
