Trail/Hiking Etiquette

Hiking is a great way to spend time outdoors. However, it’s important to follow the written and unwritten rules of the trail. Proper hiking etiquette helps to instill respect— for other hikers, wildlife and for the stewardship of the land.

Some rules of the trail/hiking etiquette:

  • Know before you go—research where you want to hike; learn the conditions and rules and regulations.
  • Know your right of way—check signage. Hikers coming uphill have the right of way. Bikes yield to hikers.

Hikers yield to horses. Yield if you have a dog.

  • Smile or nod to other trail users to help create a friendly atmosphere. If you approach from behind, announce your presence calmly.
  • Stay on designated trails. If it’s not marked, it’s not a trail.
  • Do not disturb wildlife.
  • Be mindful of trail conditions.
  • Enjoy the quiet—keep noises at bay.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.

We all know nature is something best shared with someone you love, including your canine friend. While there is some debate on whether dogs belong on trails, there are trails where dogs are allowed and others where animals are not permitted. Being respectful is an important part of trail etiquette.

Some rules of the trail when hiking with your dog:

  • Make sure your dog is allowed on the trail.
  • Obey leash laws. We recommend always using a 6-foot non-retractable leash when hiking.
  • Scoop your dog’s poop.
  • Yield to other trail users.
  • Don’t let your dog lunge at others no matter what size dog you have.
  • Stay on the trail.
  • Don’t disturb wildlife or let your dog bark at wildlife.

A lot of the fun associated with hiking is catching glimpses of wildlife. Being respectful and following the rules help increase the chances of seeing wildlife. Remember to treat wildlife with proper caution and respect. Your safety as well as the safety of these animals depends on everyone using good judgment and following these simple guidelines:

  • Know before you go—take time to review the rules before heading out.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Give animals room.
  • Do not disturb wildlife.
  • Store your food and stash your trash.
  • See something, say something.
  • Be responsible.
