July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month
Summer is here which means family get-togethers, backyard barbecues, fireworks and other parties that may cause some dogs to be anxious and fearful. Be prepared by making sure your pet is licensed and vaccinated to ensure a fast return trip home. Here are some checklists and tips to keep your pet safe this holiday:
- Create a file with your pets photo, medical records, vaccine history, pet license and microchip information that is easily accessible in the event of an emergency. * Tip: Take pictures or scan the documents to your phone or computer so they are with you at all times.
- Pet license: Pet licensing is required by law and license tags should be fastened to your pets collar or harness at all times. You can renew your pets license or license a new pet online.
- Leash: Dogs are required to be on leash in public spaces, and they keep your pet safe by preventing them from getting away from you if they become frightened. *Tip: Keep an extra leash in your car in case your leash fails or if you encounter a stray dog.
- Microchip: If your pet has been microchipped, it is important to have the microchip number accessible. Make sure the microchip is registered with your current contact information. If you are not sure which company issued your microchip, you can search here by entering the number.
- Digital ID: Modern pet identification such as digital tags, Airtags and Tile products can offer an extra layer of protection. Make sure the device is charged and registered with your current contact information, your pets medical conditions, vaccines, and emergency contact.
If your pet is lost or missing:
- Contact Mission Viejo Animal Services to alert us your pet is missing, and check the lost-and-found section of our website. You can also email a photo to animalinfo@cityofmissionviejo.org.
- Post your contact information and a recent photo on apps like Nextdoor, Facebook, and Pawboost.
- Contact the microchip company to notify them the pet is missing.
- Create colorful flyers with a recent photo of your pet, phone number, and email address. Include details like the time/date and location of where the pet was last seen, and if the pet has health conditions.
