September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month

Being a responsible dog owner is the key to your pooch having a happy and healthy life. Below are just a few suggestions on how to be the best dog parent possible.

Know your breed

Before becoming a dog owner, do your homework. It’s important you know characteristics you want in your dog before visiting the shelter. A lap dog that likes to cuddle is different from a working breed that needs lots of stimulation, so it’s important to avoid an impulsive decision. Instead, choose a dog breed best suited to your home and lifestyle.

Spend time with training

Some people say there’s no such thing as bad dogs, only bad dog owners. The most responsible pet owners spend time training their dog. For dogs, training once or twice a day, a couple of days a week in 5- to 15-minute training intervals is probably more than enough to achieve good results. Our furry friends like structure and mental stimulation, so give them what they want and crave.

Frequent walks

Take your pooch on frequent walks and let him observe and enjoy other animals and people. Interacting with other members of his own species is good for your dog's mental health and will help boost his self-esteem. You and your pup can both enjoy health benefits from going on walks. Southern California can get hot, so be sure to bring water and take hydration breaks on longer walks and hikes. Don’t forget to be a good neighbor, pet owner and make sure you pack baggies to pick up after your pooch.

Healthy dog = happy dog

Part of being a responsible dog owner is providing preventative care. Stay current with vaccinations, dental cleanings, flea medication and grooming. Feeding your pup a balanced and nutritious diet will help keep him in good shape. It’s important to respond quickly to injuries or illnesses so that your pup stays happy and healthy.

Please do your part this month and every month to be a responsible dog owner.
