Mission Viejo Library

Debbie Macomber, a #1 New York Times bestselling author and one of today's most popular writers with more than 200 million copies of her books in print, will appear in Mission Viejo on Tuesday, March 21.

John C. Fremont was not only instrumental in establishing California statehood, he was also appointed by President Lincoln to command the Department of the West during the Civil War. California became a state 11 years before the Civil War broke out. Yet many of us don't know what was happening in our state during that time period.

The Mission Viejo Library will give students the chance to take the Princeton Review full-length practice SAT or ACT test on Saturday, January 14.

The practice tests will be administered from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. in the City Hall Saddleback Room at 200 Civic Center, just across from the library.

As part of an ongoing effort to offer an array of services and programs, the Mission Viejo Library is hosting a series of free workshops for college-bound individuals.

The free 2-hour workshops, geared toward high school sophomores, juniors and others, focus on personality and choice of majors along with other college important considerations folks may not have considered.

As the City prepares for the upcoming holidays, the public should be aware of facility operating hours.

Mission Viejo City Hall will be closed Monday, December 26 through Monday, January 2.

If you're a teenager, ponder the following:  What would you do if you were trapped in the dark with only paper, a graphite pencil, 9-volt battery and an LED in your pockets?

Find out on January 17 when we channel your inner MacGyver and show you how those elements can become a functional flashlight. Drop by the Mission Viejo Library's Heritage Room any time between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. for this free event that caters to teens age 13-17.

Have you seen the brightly colored bench at the Mission Viejo Library? It's a small park bench painted in lime green, the national color for mental health awareness.

Do you have photographs stuffed in a shoebox and the images are fading as the years pass? Perhaps you have an old diary or book from a great-grandparent that's falling apart. If so, this program is perfect for you. On Saturday, December 10, you will learn tips for effectively keeping these treasures safe along with information about digitizing them into computer files for electronic preservation.

The hour-long program starts at 11 a.m. in the Mission Viejo City Council Chamber and will focus on the following:

Calling all teens: If you like tapping your creative side, then listen up.  On December 12, the Mission Viejo library will host the second in a series of craft programs for teens dubbed “Teen Pop-Up MakerSpace.”

Teens can drop by the library’s Heritage Room any time between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.  to make a quaint light-up holiday house. Along with having fun, this program allows teens to express their creativity while learning basic electronics. The program, which is fueled by a California State Library Grant, is free and registration is not necessary.

If you’ve been to the Mission Viejo Library lately, you’ve probably seen the fabulous artwork on display by local artists Judy Carroll and Simone Zhang.

Judy is a self-taught colored-pencil and mosaic artist who loves the creative process from deciding what to draw, composing the sketch to the manipulation of vivid color and creating depth through layering and texture. She finds her inspiration from organic and textured forms found in nature.
