Mission Viejo

With a new school year just around the corner, the City of Mission Viejo is collecting school supplies for children in need.

Through August 7, you can drop off new backpacks, lunchboxes, pencils & pens, calculators, paper, binders, notebooks & dividers, glue sticks, erasers and crayons and markers to the Norman P. Murray Center at 24932 Veterans Way.

More than 60 people gathered in the City Council Chamber on July 14 to witness 20 individuals try their luck in the City’s 2nd annual Adult Spelling Bee.

The contest went 18 rounds before a winner was named. Debi Blohm, an escrow officer who moved to Mission Viejo in 2007, won after correctly spelling denouement. This was her second straight victory after clinching the title in last year’s inaugural event for spelling Fahrenheit.

When heading to National Night Out on Tuesday, August 1, please consider bringing a canned or nonperishable food item to benefit the less fortunate in the area.

The nonprofit South County Outreach will be on hand with food bins during this annual interactive community fair from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 25601 Jeronimo Road. National Night Out celebrates our safe community while fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and the community. Mission Viejo Police Services is partnering with Target once again to host the fair.

You're invited to make a splash at a special Cardboard Boat Derby event on Saturday, August 12 at the Sierra Recreation Center.

The fun takes place 3:30-6 p.m. and includes an exciting derby race where teams will build a boat out of cardboard and duct tape and attempt to race to the other side of the pool without sinking. Before the competition heats up, guests will enjoy games, music and food.

Mission Viejo businesses are invited to a free training designed to protect them from cyber-attacks.

Registration is now available for the specialized training that takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 10 at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

Living in earthquake country, we all know the big one can strike at any time. When it does, do you know what to do?

As part of an ongoing effort to educate residents in emergency preparedness, the City of Mission Viejo is offering detailed information through the Emergency Survival Program (ESP).  This guide features monthly topics, historical information and what you can do now to prepare. August’s focus is about remembering to “Drop, Cover and Hold On!”

If you’ve never been to a luau, now’s your chance without even leaving Mission Viejo!  That’s right: On Sunday, August 13, the Senior Citizens Activities Committee is hosting a festive luau for the entire family from 1-3 p.m. at the Norman P. Murray Center, 24932 Veterans Way.

The City of Mission Viejo is offering Recreation and Tennis Center members a great new way to maintain their recreation and fitness memberships and register for recreation classes, fitness and aquatics programs and more through an easy, fast and secure software system.

Meet Alf, a lovable large-and-in-charge 2-year-old brown tabby.  Alf is a friendly cat who enjoys chasing toys, running through cat tunnels and snuggling inside the nearest box he can find. Alf is independent but always curious of what is going on around him and confident enough to approach anyone he meets.

It won’t be long before he displays his kitten-like bursts of energy and starts running around the house. Alf loves to be around people but would prefer to be the only cat in the home.

Mission Viejo resident Dalal Dawly has always enjoyed gardening and finding out if she could grow different vegetables and fruit. This year, she discovered she could grow a giant pumpkin in her front yard.

City staff stopped by Dalal’s home Monday to find out about growing the giant pumpkin, caring for it and if it will be turned into a giant pumpkin pie.
