The Yard: Drop-in Recreation & Homework Help
The Yard is a drop-in recreation program that provides homework help and fun activities including volleyball, dodgeball, pickleball, tennis & more for middle school students in 6th - 8th grade! Participants can self check-in and sign out at any time during program hours. Once a teen signs out for the day they cannot check back in. Students must have a waiver on file to participate and complete the code of conduct form. Home school students welcome!
Space may be limited to the first 40 teens who arrive each day. Additional teens will be permitted to check-in as others check-out. The City of Mission Viejo strives to admit all registered participants and provides staffing based on prior attendance numbers. Activities take place primarily outdoors and may be cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Yard will follow the Capistrano Valley School District Schedule, closing on days when school is not in session. Please call our program hotline at 949-470-3069 for cancellation and weather updates after 12:00 p.m. For more information, please email rcs@cityofmissionviejo.org. Program is closed for rain and inclement weather.
At this time the Yard will remain closed.
* Discounted and reduced fees available for low-income residents or low-income students enrolled in a middle school located within the City of Mission Viejo. Please complete the fee waiver form.
Bite of Reality
(Sponsored by Orange County Credit Union)
Bite of Reality provides an opportunity for students (ages 11 to 18) to make financial mistakes in a realistic, but safe, environment. Teens download an App and run through a simulation on their smartphone by visiting various interactive stations. Teens are each assigned a fictional occupation, family, income, and various debts. They must then use the "family budget" to purchase their life's needs while faced with challenge decisions as they learn their income may not always align with their desired lifestyle.
These events are FREE but registration is required! Events are offered every 6-months.
For more information call 949-859-4348, x5722 or check out this video testimonial of the program!

In light of the latest directives from the California Department of Public Health to protect public health and slow the rate of transmission of COVID-19, the City of Mission Viejo is canceling or postponing several upcoming events and programs.
The state department's new guidelines call for canceling or postponing - for at least the remainder of March - all large gatherings that include 250 people such as concerts, conferences, and professional, college and school sporting events. The guidelines also include postponing or canceling smaller gatherings held in venues like crowded auditoriums, rooms or other venues that do not allow social distancing of six feet per person.
The Orange County Credit Union, which partners with the city to hold informational workshops and events, has notified the City that they will be canceling the upcoming Bite of Reality Program, scheduled for Friday, April 10 out of an abundance of caution. We hope to reschedule this event at a later date.
