Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, the 2017 Orange County Triathlon-Duathlon will be held at beautiful Lake Mission Viejo on Sunday, June 4, 2017. This exciting Olympic distance event takes athletes through Mission Viejo neighborhoods and surrounding communities and includes a 1.5K swim in the waters of Lake Mission Viejo. Athletes then ride along the 40K bike course up and down Santiago Canyon, with part of the race crossing the 1984 Olympic finish line near Lake Mission Viejo.

The Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center will be closed Saturday and Sunday while the annual AYSO Mission Viejo youth soccer tournament takes place.

The June 3-4 closure will accommodate the many visitors expected to flock to the center and neighboring Oso Viejo Community Park for the AYSO soccer tournament. The community center will resume normal operations Monday, June 5.

The public is invited to enjoy the beautiful family-drama, ”Fly Away Home” at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 11 at Mission Viejo City Hall. This PG-rated film is sponsored by the city’s Community of Character Committee and coincides with June’s character trait of “citizenship.”
 

One of America's most beloved TV stars – Alan Alda – best known for his role on “M*A*S*H,” will present his new book in Mission Viejo on Tuesday, June 13.
 
This iconic actor and bestselling author will appear in the City’s popular Writer’s Present program at 6 p.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community Center, 24932 Veterans Way.
 

The countdown is underway until Relay For Life of Mission Viejo takes step June 3-4 at Saddleback College.

Individuals and teams are still sought to take part in this fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs. During Relay For Life, team members will take turns walking or running laps. At nightfall, hundreds of luminaries are lit in a moving ceremony to honor cancer survivors and remember those who lost their battle to the disease. The event runs from 9 a.m. Saturday, June 3 to 9 a.m. the following day.

While City Hall prepares for the holiday weekend, the public should be aware of closures at some Mission Viejo facilities. 

City Hall will be closed for normal business on Monday, but the City will host its annual Memorial Day ceremony at 8:30 a.m.

The Mission Viejo Library will operate normal business hours Saturday and Sunday and be closed on Monday.  The library reopens at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

The Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center will be open regular hours this weekend and closed on Monday.  The center reopens at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

Danny Hannah is man on a mission determined to soar with Eagles. After recently completing an ambitious planting project, this Boy Scout from Troop #789 is on his way to earning his wings.
 
For his Eagle Scout project, Danny led about 60 volunteers in planting 725 plants along the Oso Creek Trail from Celebration Garden toward Jeronimo Road. The project helped to beautify the area with drought-tolerant plants.

Celebrate the unofficial start of summer by making a splash on Friday, June 9 at the Teen Scene Splash.

Middle school students will enjoy their favorite tunes pumped out by DJ Mad Platter from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Montanoso Recreation Center, 25800 Montanoso Drive.

The City of Mission Viejo will live stream its annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, giving residents the chance to witness the event which honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

Tune in to https://www.youtube.com/MissionViejoCA beginning at 8:30 a.m. to watch the ceremony, which will be set to a backdrop of American Heroes Tribute Banners. The 3-foot by 9-foot banners pay homage to American soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
